Is there a car paint color that is less likely to rust?
The simple answer to that question is no. Paint is a plastic (urethane) film that adheres to the surface of the car, and if it is applied properly, along with all the appropriate primers, sealers and clearcoats, all colors will protect equally. The paint film has to fail in some manner, or be scratched off or sandblasted or chipped down to the metal to start the rust process, OR what happens in most cases is that the car startes to rust from the inside out, behind the painted metal, where there is no undercoat or where water has found it’s way between the different layers of metal panels, usually between the weld marks. Even the almighty Honda and Toyota designers can’t stop their cars from rotting out in the rear wheel openings where the rear bumper attaches.
Now, having said that, painters know that dark colors, like black and dark blue can be prone to premature finish failure because these colors get much hotter when out in the bright sun. Therefore, the paint finish expands and contracts much more on a dark car than a lighter colored one. Over time, this constant extreme heating and cooloing could cause the different layers of clear, color coat, and primer and sealer to flake off the roofs, trunk lids, and hoods of cars, leaving the metal exposed and then it will rust. So, over the long haul, the color of the car can effect how long the paint will last, and without proper care, or a repainting when necessary, dark cars will rust sooner than lighter ones.
