CAR PAINTING HISTORY
Does a visit to auto body shop for a scratch paint job makes an entry into car history?

My 2006 car, which I just got a fortnight before got a scratch in the side of the front bumper by rubbing against the side of the garage entrance :-( . This is my first car and so I am very very depressed. Does anybody have an idea regarding the below
1) Whether the body shop will repaint a 1/2 feet by 1/2 feet portion or they will charge me for the entire front bumper?
2) Will getting the work done from a body shop put an permanent entry in the car history?
3) Any idea how much will they charge for it?

The proper repair would be to remove the bumper from the car so it can be thoroughly scuffed (sanded to make coatings adhere), and so coatings can be applied over the entire panel. After the damage is repaired the part would be primed and sanded again; then the new paint would probably be blended or feathered into the old, keeping it confined to as small an area as possible. Then, the entire bumper cover would be protected by a couple of coats of clearcoat. Some paint brands require an additive to be mixed with the paint to make it pliable on flexible and semi-rigid surfaces like bumper covers.

Insurance companies and police records are a couple of sources where VIN history companies like Carfax get their data. As long as there wasn’t a police report and you pay the repair bill without the use of insurance, VIN history retailers will probably not be notified. Independent body shops usually don’t report to them. However, that might not be true of shops that partner with insurance companies.

The job you described doesn’t amount to much money – perhaps $250 to $500 – depending on what part of the country you are located in. The folks at http://www.SafeCollisionRepairs.com can help you find a reputable shop that doesn’t participate in direct repair deals with insurance companies.

Please don’t fret over this. When proper repairs have been performed, you shouldn’t be able to tell there has ever been damage to the bumper.
