CAR PAINTING OAHU
Moving- Cali to Hawai’i…?

Hey there…. I’m moving from california to oahu for grad school for the next couple of years. Do I need to take a new drivers test to get a Hawaii Driver’s license? How does that work? Also, to those in Hawaii, I’m likely shipping my car out to the island, and I often hear that the ocean air is bad for the paint and body of my car. Is this true?? What can I do to minimalize this? Thanks in advance!

To get my Hawaii license I went to the DMV with my out of state license, and took the written exam (they keep your out of state license). I picked up my manual at the grocery store (foodland, safeway, Longs Drug store, etc.) Most companies ship your car in a container which will protect it from the ocean air. Once you are here, a weekly/bi-monthly washing will slow the effects of the ocean salt but not stop it. The entire island is subject to the salt air. Once your vehicle is here you have 30 days to register your car in Hawaii. You need to first get the safety check completed, also make sure that your car insurance covers Hawaii. you then go to satellite city hall with your safety check, registration and proof of insurance to receive your hawaii plates. Than return to the place that you received your safety check to get your inspection stickers. If you have any after market modifications to your vehicle you must get an additional sticker called a “recon” sticker. You will also have to pay your vehicle taxes when you register your car, it is done by weight, so if you drive an SUV like me, it will cost over $200 to register it. Just a heads up. Email me if you have any more questions
