What do i need to build a full chevy 454 big block motor?
ill be purchasing a 1970 chevelle for restoration i want power a 454 sounds nice. i need everything that will give the car power can you please list pretty much every part or sections of the engine i need? i will need to purchase from top to bottom and front to back of the engine/tranny/drive shaft/rear end to the electrical thank you!
reason why i ask is because i want to surprise my father when he comes back to the country i want to have a father&son bond that we havent had for years since i havent spent time with him for pretty much half my life time. He is a big car guy used to be a garage mechanic when i was young i would ask him but like i said its a SURPRISE!
as for cars in my life and eyes it will be my new hobby and something i choose to have around until i have grandchildren. i have been around cars all my life but not very familiar with whats under the hood what can i say? im a newb lol THANKS IN ADVANCE!
first it really depends what your tryin to go after. do you want a stock big block or a high performance machine that will tear up the pavement. (i would go with the second one myself since youe building the engine)
you will need the engine block and probably want to get it machined if its not new to remove all the years of wear and tear and maybe bor it out to a bigger cylinder displacement. then buy all your internals like your crankshaft, pistons, camshaft, push rods, oil pump, ect. then once that is all put together (and torqued down) buy your cylinder heads, rocker arms, valve assemblies, intake manafold, exhaust manafold, oil pan, valve covers ect. and install those. and there you have your engine.
as for a tranny i would go with a heavy duty trans sith at least a stage 3 shift kit if you want to go with a automatic (good for drag racing) or a 4 speed munsi M-22 (fun on the street but slower on the strip unless you can really rip gears)
and for the rear end it also depends what your lookin for. ill give you the basics on gear ratios to get ya started. the lower gear ratios (like a 2.89 : 1) is good for top speed but slow on acceleration. middle of the line ratios (like a 3.55 : 1) are more balanced out so you have faster acceleration but less top speed. the high grar ratios (like a 4.11 : 1) have fast acceleration and reach their top speed fast but are slow cruizers. now the difference in a posi trac rear end and a limited slip rear end. in a posi rear end there are no spider gears to allow the tires to spin at different speeds while cornering where as a limited slip rear end has the spider gears to allow this. posi rear ends are the best on the strip but really cannot be street driven due to turning. limited slip can be used on the strip but does not equilly distribute the power to the wheels.
you best bet to get the exact advice your looking for is to get on a search engine and lookup chevy forums, make an account on a forum and ask for more specific advice.
