what was the reason for the expansion of japan?
I am very ashamed of myself. I am a pre-law student and it seems that I have inaccurate accounts of meiji restoration and so on. I was having a conversation with a history major at the car wash yesterday and he said that the reason why Japan expanded further from its jurisdiction (ie korea, taiwan, philippines) was because it wanted to liberate these nations from western colonizers? I understand that Japan had issues with foreign trading before and somehow they (Japan) used as an “excuse” that it wanted to save the rest of Asia from the Americans. Is this correct? And no this is not hw.. -___-
Ah, you’re lucky my friend. I’m a history major as well and have just written a paper on this myself!
Now, he argues a point that is true, but has been debated against. Pretty much the Japanese justified their conquest of Asia as a “Liberation Mission” against Western hegemony. They used this view to justify the occupation of South-East Asian countries that they occupied.
This seems good, however it was just a cover up for Japan to go into these countries and exploit them for their economic needs (Japan had little oil and rubber which it needed to sustain it’s military). In conjunction with the West being Hostile to Japan; the Japanese felt it was imperative to capture these countries’ resources if it were to sustain itself as a world power amongst the Western Nations.
Anyways, people also justify Japanese Imperialism as liberation from the West, which in part is true. However the Japanese occupation was more brutal than the West. Japanese were racist and undermined local cultures they established themselves over. Implemented their politics as superior and exploited and oppressed the Asian people they were considered to be liberating. Overall, the “Japanese Liberation” was false and was just a cover up for the Japanese to exploit South-East Asia AND rather than Japan liberating South-East Asian from the West, the JApanese simply replaced the West’s rule with a more brutal one; therefore South-East Asia become liberated from a fading Japanese Empire rather than from the West being kicked out.
