“Modified” EPA ratings?
OK I drive a 1985 Pontiac 6000, 2.8L V6 with a 2 barrel carburetor and overdrive transmission. The car sat in a garage for almost a decade and after I bought it I did a mechanical restoration involving replacing the gas tank, rebuilding the carburetor, new intake manifold gaskets, and a bunch of other odds and ends.
A couple weeks ago I took it on a 1200 mile trip and it returned 28 MPG, at an average speed between 70 and 75 MPH. The 1985 EPA rating is EXACTLY 28 MPG. The recently “modified” estimate is 26 MPG.
What are the “modified” numbers supposed to represent, people driving 90 MPH?!?!
The new numbers have nothing to do with fuel.
They represent a more realistic testing methodology. For example up until 2008 the EPA didn’t use air conditioning when testing for mileage. They do now. Also the acceleration was far more leisurely than you encountered in the real world (Think 20 second 0-50 runs). The new revised estimates are much more realistic than the previous figures.
Chances are if you had the A/C cranked up you would’ve been close to 26 MPG. But at any rate it’s not uncommon to be able to get better mileage than the EPA estimates these days, but back in the early – mid 1980’s the EPA estimates were a joke, and it would take divine intervention to match them.
