CAR RESTORATION STEPS
How should I start a Jeep which has sat for 16 years?

I have a 1976 CJ Jeep that has sat in a garage in Colorado for 16 years. The V8 engine was built and rated at 385hp – I am unsure if it’s the original 304 or a bigger one from the Wagoneer.

I am pretty experienced with car mechanics, but I’ve never approached something this old or in this kind of condition (give me 90s/00s Nissan engines any day!).

So, how should I approach this? I’d like to get the engine turning over to assess the viability of even attempting a restoration. If I can get it going I will look at rebuilding the engine later.

I’d appreciate a well-thought out, step-by-step answer. Thanks!

drain the fuel and oil, replace with new, change all filters, remove spark plugs add a small amount of 30 weight oil to each cyl, replace plugs, check all wires, hoses, belts and coolant level, replace if needed, if a points ignition replace points and condenser, cap and rotor, basically a full tune up, add battery, add a small amount of fuel down the carb, keep a fire extinguisher close, cross your fingers and turn over.
