Volkswagen Bus Restoration Help Pleaseeee!
?
I just bought a ‘65 walkthrough panel VW bus. I’ve been wanting to do this since I was little, but it’s always been a dream. Now it’s done, but I’m a sixteen year old girl who is completely clueless about cars. This is a non running bus. No motor. No transmission. Covered in rust. I am planning to spend about 20,000 on a complete restoration. But where do I start??? HELP PLEASEEEEEE!!!!!!!
Well, like anything else you start from the ground up if you have that kind of resource.
1) Remove all of the old rusted panels and determine which ones are useless and need to be replaced.
2) WIth the panels off check the frame and floor. Plan on how to repair the floor and re-enforce any rusted frames.
3) With the frame and floor off check all the brakes, lines, tubes (accelerator and heating) gas lines, tank lines, etc.. and repair or replace. Check the gas tank too for rust and replace it or reline it
4) Still with the floor off, install a new tranny and engine (its a lot easier when you can work without a floor.
5) Ok.. now start to reinstall the body. If you put on new panels, fine.. but if you reuse the old ones, repair or straighten them out first.
6) Body is back on.. reinstall the little stuff.. seats, steering wheel, etc. but not the windows and only the drivers seat to be able to get it around
7) Paint it.. spend the extra bucks for a good paint job with multiple clear coats.. especially on top. Paint the inside of the doors and dashboard. Paint the entire inside if you want to do that. Do not forget to paint the wheels. – this is easier done without tires on them… also if possible pick up an extra wheel or two and paint them.
Let the paint dry for several weeks.. work on the inside with paneling, insulation, extra wiring for whatever (you can always use a cig. lighter in the back and perhaps some extra lights.
9) Paint is dry.? Put in the windows .. (this way you got the entire body painted), seats, door panels, etc.. Put on the outside stuff (lights, bumpers, chrome..etc)
10) Add things.. Roof racks work really well and look sooooooo ‘busish’.
thats it.. I assumed you had already checked the brakes and tires…but if not do them somewhere along the line.
go enjoy the ride
