Buying a Classic? Don’t Forget to Inspect!
When purchasing a car, one of the most natural things is to test for functionality as well as performance. To know whether a car has the potential for purchase, it is important to have certain parameters to look out for. The same case applies for classic vehicles. It may be assumed that since it is a vintage car, the owner has maintained it in mint condition. This may not necessarily be the case; therefore, an assessment of the car should precede any purchase.
The first and foremost thing before purchase is to find out whether the car is legally owned and has all the corresponding paperwork. The papers should be original and without any sign of alterations. The VIN that is on the car should adequately match the one on the paperwork. If the vehicle is said to have undergone some alteration or restoration, it may be prudent to know what work was done and if possible go through pictures taken before and after the restoration. The service history should be known as well as how often the car undergoes maintenance. The car engine is what propels it; therefore, its state should be thoroughly scrutinized. The car should be started and the engine sound monitored for any unnatural sounds especially when it is revved severally. The smoke emission level also tells a lot about the state of the engine and should be checked particularly when the engine gets heated up.
The ultimate test of performance comes during the road test. Here the engine’s acceleration is gauged as well as the sound of the engine during high and low speed. If the car is automatic, a keen ear and handling is able to find out any faults in the transmission. The same case applies to manual gear transmission and clutch engagement operation which should be as smooth as possible. The dashboard gauges and accessories should be in good working order. While handling the car, the steering operation should be easy and responsive with minimal resistance. The brakes need to be effective, without any pulling or noise and while on the road the effectiveness of the suspension should be checked on a relatively rough road.
A visual inspection should verify the state of wear and tear such as signs of rust, dents, body alignment, improper repair and paint work. Using a magnet can detect areas where filler material has been used to repair any damage. The doors should be able to open and close with ease and without any unnecessary jamming. Lighting is an important component of a car and all the interior and external lights are supposed to be in good working condition. The tires should be the right size with adequate tread depth and pressure. One should remember to consider the state of the spare wheel as well as other rubber components such as wipers and rubber trimmings. When buying a classic car, it is recommended that one should consider the credibility of the seller before any transaction takes place. Once everything is put in place, buying a classic car will be any easy task.
