a question for all auto painters?
do you resent that people think anyone can paint a car? personally, it always pisses me off every time i read an article in Hot Rod that says it’s so easy anyone can do it. CHEAP! i’ve spent the better part of my life painting, and it’s something i take pride in. it’s a skill, a craft. and then you have the customers who want to argue about the price. they see the ads for maaco and think that’s the standard. any more, i say to them, ok, go to maaco and in 6 months when the paint is dead, bring it back to me and i’ll charge you double because i’ll have to strip it now to do it right. my favorite is when i tell them to buy their own paint and they can’t believe how much it costs.
Well, the first car I painted still looks good after almost 10 yrs. I did however get in a lot of practice on a sheet of paneling in the yard. Not to mention that I spent a lot of time on it. It is, by all means, not a several thousand dollar paint job. I have found that most of the paint job is in the prep. And these people who opt out for the sloppy but cheap job places like maaco will soon find out that they don’t prep. They’ll even shoot right over the dirt if you don’t wash it yourself. Not to mention they don’t even scuff. I have found that it doesn’t pay to get pissed at these idiots because they will only learn the hard way…..you get what you pay for. I started getting into it myself after a so-called professional body shop did my car to the tune of $4000 and it started blistering in under 6 mo.!!!! All due to piss poor prep work!
